Learning Premier - May 6th 2021

Saturday, May 08, 2021

As part of the adobe cloud license, our school has purchased for the academy kids this year includes the editing software called premier. Much similar to final cut this software is the real deal. I wanted to utilize this software for my project because I wanted to incorporate some sophisticated and complicated words and texts in my trailer which cannot be achieved in imovie. One of the word sequences you will see is the word ‘MIX’ on the screen with the primary colors flowing through the words. (editing pictured to the left). Learning a whole new software in such little amount of time has had its challenges but thanks to youtube I’ve been following in-depth tutorials and getting the hang of it. If you want to see my editing in action head to the ‘About’ and click on the project trailer! Happy watching!

Trailer BTS 😱🤫 - May 5th 2021

Saturday, May 08, 2021

As my project is wrapping up and expo is coming to an end it's time to market our products. One way capstone does this is by shooting a trailer. Below you will find an attached 1-minute timelapse video of me shooting aspects of Modern Mixing’s trailer. I did not end up using everything I shot but I wanted to have more footage to work with rather than less that way I can be prepared and make the trailer shorter than struggle to make it longer. Be sure to check out the trailer once it's posted! It will be under the “About” tab! The BTS video is attached to this post! Happy watching!

Creating Mockups - Apr 26th 2021

Wednesday, April 28, 2021

In past years in expo, our team has made a product website. This website had basically included everything we had worked on over the course of the entire year and then some. But one thing that in other years the website has lacked was an actual ‘product’ or ‘shop’ feel when presenting our product virtually. This year because we both have a launchpad and an external website we can separate the information from each other allowing capstone students to have the informational website (launchpad) and an actual product website like an online shop or store (external website). One thing that often is displayed on these websites is the product. I’ve decided instead of taking hours of setting up a set, and lighting and then taking pictures and editing them I am going to create mockups. Essentially what mockups are is a photo template where you can enter your product into the desired scene. I’ve created 2 types of mockups. One for my actual palette and one mockup for the paper version. I’ve included these mockups under the product image when you go and try to buy my product in order to give the best realistic product website feel as possible.

Website Development - Apr 25th 2021

Wednesday, April 28, 2021

As time flies through April I’ve started to pay more attention to my website. My website has been on the back burner as I've done my community outreach and prototype. This way I was able to put all my effort and focus into the most important thing at that time - my prototype. But since I have not worked on my website in a while when I opened wix I hated what I saw. I felt that it was too busy. It did not feel like the website I wanted. Instead It was everything that I did not want. While I tried to tie in my logo colors but creating paint splatter so the background they are too overpowering from the rest of the website. Keeping this in mind in my second attempt and my website I still kept them as a background but toned down the saturation/intensity of the splatters in order to create a ‘background feel’ to focus the viewer's attention on what's important - my palette.

Which Method is Better? Apr 23rd 2021

Wednesday, April 28, 2021

After having my community of artists participate in an experiment testing my palette I had each participant vote for which method of recording they liked better. Surprisingly they all voted the same way! And as someone who participated in this experiment I 100% agree with their answer and even had the same answer myself. If you want to find out which way was deemed better by high school AP Art students you can go check out my experiment analysis which can be found under the "Research and Data" tab under the subsection named "Product Usage Results and Feedback"

Community Testing! - April 21st 2021

Wednesday, April 28, 2021

Today in my AP art class I teamed up with a select group of people (two pictured above) to test my modern mixing prototype! I sampled a group of 8 people and tested my palette accuracy by having each participant mix the same color one by one. In the first round I had everyone mix red, blue and white together. Then I had each participant record their mix 2 different ways. When I met with my mentor back in march together we had brainstormed 2 possible paper ‘versions’ or accessories that I can include with my palette in order to provide the ‘record’ aspect of my palette. When the experiment had finished and each user had been able to use both versions of the recording system I had asked them which version they liked better in order to help refine and design my palette to benefit the user on all bases.

Prototype Round 2! - Apr 15th 2021

Tuesday, April 27, 2021

This week is spring break, I can relax, sleep and I have all the time in the world. Over break, I spent a good amount of my free time creating the final modern mixing product. In this version, I was able to up the thickness of all the circles ensuring that when handled them they don't break. And it was a success. And not only did the thickness of the lines create a more stable sticker it also created a layout that looked sleeker, cleaner, and easier on the eye. Not that the circles were hard to see before, it's that the improved circles with thicker lines pop out more against the clear palette or whatever color, print or background is underneath the palette. When we go back into school I plan on using my newly improved palettes to run an experiment of color mixing with my peers enrolled in the AP Drawing and Painting class at PHS.

Community Outreach - Mar 30th 2021

Tuesday, April 27, 2021

Before our school departed for April break I was able to send out my survey about the problem I am addressing with modern mixing. Since paint or art, in general, is not a topic with lots of research or scientific studies I decided to record my own data to further back the problem for artists that modern mixing will help solve. That, it's a waste of time, money, and supplies to try to remix dried-out colors.

Solving Problems - Mar 21st 2021

Monday, April 19, 2021

Yesterday when I was making my first design of my palette when I came across a problem. The smallest circles that the cricut machine cut, the lines of the circles were too thing so when I tried to lift the stickers from the mat most of them broke or they were already broken due to how thin and fragile the lines of the circle were. This occurred because when setting up the design for the cricut to cut I used the same circle in different sizes. So when I made the circle larger the lines were larger and more durable, then when I made the circle smaller the lines ended up being smaller and thinner. my solution is to re-design and cut the smaller circles so they have a higher line thickness. This will ensure that they will not break when being cut by the Cricut or handled by me/contact paper when transferring them from the mat to the palette.

It's Prototype Time! - Mar 20th 2021

Wednesday, March 31, 2021

As March rolls around it’s time to start creating a prototype! I’ve done research and consulted with my mentor about what materials would be best to use when creating my product. The actual insert that I am creating will be made out of a clear plastic sheet that has about ¼ inch thickness. It is actually a plastic placemat for eating but it also works for my purpose! So my plastic placemat is the base of the palette/insert, the circular measurements on the palette will be black circular stickers. I plan in making these stickers in 1in, .75 in, and .4 in sizes. I’ve chosen these sizes because after ideating and drawing various circle sizes in different layouts I’ve concluded that these sizes provide maximum flexibility depending on how much of the desired color you want to make. I will be creating the stickers with a Cricut machine. A Cricut machine is a decal machine that is used for cutting designs into paper, felt, vinyl fabric, and many other materials. I will be using this machine to cut out stickers using black vinyl that way all the circles are the same size and I am able to eliminate human error. And the last material that I will be using in addition to the placemat and the black vinyl is clear contact paper. I will be using the contact paper in two ways. 1) I will be using the contact paper to lift the circular stickers from the original cut surface and then place them onto the plastic placemat. The purpose of using the contact paper in this fashion is to limit possible damage to the stickers due to human error and strength AND to keep the circular shape of the sticker during transfer. 2) The contact paper will be used as a sealant on the back of the palette where the stickers will lay so the stickers cannot be torn off, damaged, or affected by water when the paint is washed off the palette.

First Draft - Mar 12th 2021

Monday, March 15, 2021

After careful consideration and input from my mentor, we both felt the design shown in this post was the right direction/design to move forward with. We both felt that the variations of sizes, layout, and space in between each other measurements would be the most versatile and easiest for even the most artistically challenged person to use! See as this is the first rough draft I drew on the insert already used with the Matterson sta wet palette in order to keep the same measurements and to create a viable and accurate design of my end goal for my final palette. My next steps will be to create my palette and then reach out to my community of artists and ask them to use my palette for community outreach and to get feedback from users who will be using my palette in order to see what needs to be improved if anything as well as received constructive criticism and or feedback! I also plan to create a system in which the user will be able to write down and keep track of which colors go in which sized circles and which measurements of what colors create their desired outcome.

Mentor Contact - Mar 7th 2021

Monday, March 15, 2021

My mentors are professional artists Bruce and Joanne Hunter. Bruce and Joanne own an art school called The Art Spot located in Danbury Connecticut. I have known them for 7 years and their school is where I grew my skills and passion for art. I chose Bruce and Joanne as my mentors because I’ve grown up with them so we already have a connection, and that they work with kids very often those who have lots of artistic ability and those who have none. And because they work with people who have a variety of art experience and ability would be a good judge about how those students of all skills and ages would interact and grasp the main purpose and how to use the palette correctly and to its fullest potential. I have already met with my mentors and have recorded our conversation on a document of questions asked by me and answers given by Bruce and Joanne. This document as well as key takeaways can be found under the Project Development tab in the mentor connection section.

Prototype Ideation - Mar 3rd 2021

Monday, March 15, 2021

As March rolls around it's time to get started on my prototype. I have been playing around with design layouts of circular measurements that will be used in the final prototype of my palette. The purpose of these circular measurements is to streamline the mixing process so the user can keep track of the mixed colors they are using on their projects in progress. In the photo, you can see a few different designs and sizes of measurements. I wanted to come up with multiple ideas and layouts to see which ones would function the best, as well as being aesthetically pleasing to the eye. I created this rough sketch by using a regular palette insert that is put into the materson sta wet palette (the palette I am creating an insert for) in order to have to prototype ideation be close as possible to my ending design by already working on an insert made for the palette that I want my idea to be compatible with. I drew on and traced the circular measurements and tried to base them off of how much paint I think one would need for certain amounts of colors. Ex: if someone needs more than one color for a background example, they would need some bigger circles, and if someone only needs a small amount of color for fine details I made sure to include smaller circles for a smaller amount of paint.

Reaching Out to Mentors! - Feb 19th 2021

Friday, February 19, 2021

It's that time of year again! Reaching out to mentors over the years has taught me multiple things, 1) not everyone you reach out to will respond, 2) sometimes there is not a perfect mentor for your project, and 3) when you reach out to your future mentor you need to be clear about what being a mentor will entail and what exactly will the person be a mentor for? Including this information when you reach out to a possible mentor will help your chances of them responding with a yes because they know what they are getting themselves into! So make sure when reaching out to your mentor you are clear about what you want from them and what they will be mentoring you on or about! People to think about for a mentor - family friend, a teacher, parents' colleagues, a mentor can even be a person you don't know. You can reach out to someone who wrote a study you are using for a project, you can reach out to a professor who teaches a course related to your project. The people you are able to reach out to using modern technology are endless!

Learning With Adobe Cloud! - Feb 10th 2021

Friday, February 19, 2021

As we are coming back from our February break I've been working hard in my free time. My school recently bought adobe cloud licenses for those who enrolled in the STEM academy and higher-level art classes. Luckily I am in both! This adobe cloud license allows me access to apps such as Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator. Both softwares can be used to create interesting graphics and images. My goal is to become very familiar with both Illustrator and photoshop in order to create my own personalized graphics and images for each post within my launchpad pages. Seeing as I want to go into art it would be very beneficial to learn tools such as Illustrator and Photoshop. I have been following many youtube videos and tutorials offer by Adobe in order to get comfortable with all the tools they have to offer for each software. The tutorial I just finished was on the Ipad version of Illustrator where I learn how to manipulate shapes in order to build a robot. I hope to learn and apply these skills to make my own graphics for my launchpad website!

Trial and Error - Feb 8th 2021

Wednesday, February 10, 2021

As we move into February I’ve been experimenting with the layout of my palette. In these photos, I drew coin sizes circles on a plastic box and filled the circles with various colors of paint. I then mixed the colors together. I did this experiment twice and found that my colors after I mixed and the paint dried I found that my second test was slightly darker than my original test. This is because my circles were slightly different in sizes from model to model which ended up varying the final color. But knowing this I was not defeated since the color did not exactly match because my goal is to streamline efficiency in making the same color so you can get as close as possible the first time create a color rather than taking lots of time and wasting paint to find the same color.

Time Flys - Jan 12th 2021

Monday, January 11, 2021

As January moves quickly I’ve found that keeping a calendar and list of goals to accomplish as often as every day has helped me ad my project stay on track. Last week I focused on creating my launchpad and finalizing my brand ie: logo, project name, color scheme. With most of my classes planned out in the document, I have found an uptick in my ability to stay on my project track as well as on task. I’ve even noticed an increase in productivity within my capstone project as well as in other classes. I’ve made sure to include deadlines like when my launchpad is due, when expo fest is as well as multiple checkpoints with my capstone teacher to help keep me on track if needed. In addition, I have also written in weekly goals that I should be focusing on as well as classroom goals that I want myself to focus on in each class. My time management is very flexible and not set in stone, that way if I see myself falling behind or in need of more time than I allotted I am able to shift and switch my plan to better fit what I need. This time management plan is only used for my capstone project at the moment but I am considering creating a personal one that way I can keep track of my homework, days off of school, work schedule, and sports all in one place!

Research, Research, and More Research - Jan 10th 2021

Monday, January 11, 2021

Hi everyone, as we ring in the new year I have been scouring the internet for scholarly and non-scholarly articles related to the art of color mixing. As you can tell by my search history I eventually was successful, but this success did not come without its challenges. Art is a very contemporary theme or topic - one might not think art is scientific but it is! The different chemical properties of different mediums all affect each other in different ways when mixed together. And because art doesn’t seem like a scientific topic, quality articles were very hard to come by. While researching I found myself turning up empty-handed when searching for “paint mixing” or just “paint” in general. I was forced to expand my search. I research the “color wheel” and “color theory” as well as “chemicals found in paint” that way I can explain to my audience why certain colors mixed together create unwanted effects or 'muddy colors' as we artists call them. Topics like the “color wheel” and “color theory” can both be applied to color mixing even though it is not directly about the different substances mixing together. After countless hours of researching and combing through unreliable articles from the internet that said the same thing as the article listed before, I was able to find 6 articles that are unique and different from each other while still all revolving or relating to mixing paint and the different colors.

Modern mixing logos

Branding - Jan 6th 2021

Thursday, January 07, 2021

Hi everyone! I have been working diligently to design a logo for my project “modern mixing”. I first started off with a palette knife because that is used to mix paints and that’s what my project was about. I then wanted to incorporate my name into my logo. I presented my first logo with text to my peers, and after feedback, they felt the text that I used for my name did not match the overall feeling or vibe of my project. After many drafts of a new font, I landed on black letters with the paint dripping over them..
