The Problem
Many students, especially girls, do not have the opportunity to explore their interest in the STEM field. It is no surprise when I say we don’t have enough girls in the STEM fields. If they are able to fight gender oppression, in New Haven many students face financial problems at home which prevents them from participating in extracurricular activities. Besides, New Haven public schools do not have many STEM related after school activities.
The Solution
I created a FLL (FIRST LEGO League) Team at a local Middle School, John S. Martinez Sea & Sky Magnet School, in New Haven. The goal for this team was to open a new world of opportunity to middle schoolers regardless of their gender or financial status. FLL is a robotics team for Middle Schoolers where students build their robots from Legos and compete in competitions with teams from all around the world. It is the younger version of FRC (FIRST Robotics Competition) which is for high schoolers where students build robots using real materials and tools such as wood, metal, bandsaw, CNC Routers, and more. This FLL Team would help students, with an interest in STEM, better understand and explore their passions.
