Data Analysis
For the women and BIPOC I interviewed, we discussed what their experiences in STEM have been like. Being in predominantly white institutions, many of them have experienced discrimination or implicit biases, such as stereotypes, mistreatment, microagressions, and ignorance. Students noticed the lack of accessibility which caused them to struggle more than their white counterparts. It was hard for most BIPOC to find resources that would help them succeed. These experiences fall under the responsibility of the system that failed to provide and cater to BIPOC but constantly gain from the oppression of minorities.
When I interviewed white males, they discussed how they recognized the privilege and power that they had. They understood the mistakes that they have made and are actively trying to call out the faults of the system as well as amplify the voices of BIPOC and women in these institutions. Instead of making the minorities responsible for creating diversity, they are finding ways to create welcoming spaces in the scientific community.
