Tasks:
Specific Resources - Explain how this resource is relevant to your project.
Attend the UCHC Library Field Trip
(completed)
I attended a Field Trip to the Uconn Health Center Library in order to have access to resources such as PubMed which I used to find many relevant articles to gather information from in the future. These articles either gave background information about certain topics/ideas I wanted to learn about or some exact treatments that were proven effective towards lowering stress levels in children.
Research why students get anxiety or stress from dental clinics in the first place
I will use library databases, such as Britannica, and articles I found in PubMed in order to take notes and annotate in Noodletools to help when I write my research paper about my question. By learning where the actual anxiety begins, I can better understand why certain treatments work better than others.
Behaviour Evaluation Scales For Pediatric Dental
Shindova, M. P. (n.d.). Behaviour evaluation scales for pediatric dental patients – review and clinical experience. Retrieved October 11, 2019, from sciendo.com website: https://content.sciendo.com/view/journals/folmed/56/4/article-p264.xml?tab_body=pdf
This article showed how the use of a modified Behaviour Evaluation Scale adapted from Kurosu assessed the behaviour of children ages 6-12 using the eyes and facial expressions. This information can help me understand what makes the behaviour of children change while at the dentist which can explain why certain children are dental phobic.
Patients – Review And Clinical Experience
A review of the effect of music on dental anxiety in children
Dental anxiety: An understudied problem in youth
Management of fear and anxiety in the dental clinic:a review
Armfield, J. M., & Heaton, L. J. (n.d.). Management of fear and anxiety in the dental clinic:a review. Retrieved October 17, 2019, from Australian Dental Journal website: https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/epdf/10.1111/adj.12118
This Dental Journal explains the common dental fears and anxieties in many dental clinics and talks about why certain children have these fears. It also explains different ways to treat dental anxiety so that children are less dental phobic. This can help me answer my question because it shows the beginning of the anxiety and the treatments for it.
Research treatments that could help lower stress and anxiety in children
I will use library databases, such as Britannica, and articles I found in PubMed in order to take notes and annotate in Noodletools to help when I write my research paper about my question. By understanding the many different treatments available to patients suffering from fear of dental clinics, I hopefully can change the future of dentistry in the long run.

Take the Basic Life Saving Course - American Heart Association
I am going to take the Basic Life Saving Course while taking my capstone so it can give me more information about CPR training and the heimlich maneuver. Even though this does not directly relate to my topic, it will help me in my shadowing experience since I will be prepared for anything to occur.
Take the Online Medical Terminology Course- Tunxis Community College
I am going to take the Online Medical Terminology Course through Tunxis Community College while enrolled in Healthcare 21 in order to expand on my vocabulary. This will help me understand what is being explained in my articles, what I should know while shadowing, and in general just to sound more professional while talking with someone who understands the topic at a much deeper level.
Weekly Updating of the Digital Portfolio
I am going to update my Digital Portfolio every week with new information and research I find and professionals I reach out to in order to organize my thoughts in one place and keep check of what I still have to do.
Email Dr. Rosenberg (orthodontist) and Dr. Alligood (dentist) about shadowing
I will email my Orthodontist and my Dentist asking if I can shadow at both of their dental clinics for about 7 hours and 30 minutes each to get a total amount of 15 hours of shadowing.
Dr. Rosenburg office : 860-325-3854
Email
Dr. Alligood office : 860-606-7017
Email through website
Shadow Dr. Rosenburg and Dr. Alligood, maybe Mrs. Diederich
This shadowing experience will help me learn about the environment of the offices and where stress can possibly develop from. Also the application of my vocabulary knowledge can help me prepare for a future career in this field by giving me real world scenarios in which I can utilize that knowledge.
Write research paper
I will write a 2,500 word research paper that combines and utilizes all of the research I have conducted over the course of the year to answer my overarching question, what types of treatments should be given to children by dental professionals in order to lower anxiety and change the common childhood perception of the dentist?
Hello! My name is Rachel, and I am currently researching the field of Dentistry, specifically how different types of anxiety related to the Dentist can be treated. This topic really interests me because I loved learning about Psychology during my Junior year and I also want to continue to study Dentistry in college. I'm hoping this new information can change treatments used in Dental offices in the future! I have also been exposed to some of this information already since I’ve had braces for 5 years, and I regularly visit the dentist, meaning I understand the vocab a little bit from picking it up while I was there. This coming year, I am going to be attending the University of Connecticut majoring in Biological Sciences in hopes to become a dentist and continue my research!
