The Problem

Every year, 8 million tons of plastic enter our ocean. By 2050, there will be more plastic in the ocean than fish! Furthermore, in 2019 the world has produced and incinerated more than 850 million metric tons of greenhouse gases. Plastic is everywhere we go, in our ocean, our air, our clothes, and even our body wash! Did you know there are microbeads of plastic in our soap? These are smaller than a millimeter, so they are not always thoroughly filtered out in sewage treatments. The water you drink most likely has plastic in it and without even knowing it, you probably took a shower in plastic particles. We can’t let plastic ruin our lives and the Earth anymore! In addition, we are ruining our bodies with the harsh chemicals in our soap. Our skin is the largest organ in our body, so it should be one of the most important things we care about. Our skin does its job by absorbing the nutrients and vitamins of the substances that we put on our bodies. We are the ones at fault because we use body wash with harsh washing detergents such as parabens, sulfates, and triclosan. These chemicals promote allergies, disrupt hormones, and increase the risks of cancer. There are so many problems in our everyday lives that we ignore. Therefore, the Kel Jel group is here to fix these problems and make a change.

Kristal Santiago

Kristal is our main blogger. As our blogger, she documents, edits, and reports everything that happens during our STEM time. She keeps our team organized and focused. Just like every other member, she helps pitch ideas and conducts research for Kel Jel.

Feyza Horuz

Feyza is one Kel Jel's marketers. She is our team's idea person. She is the member who proposed part of the Kel Jel idea, the jelly pod. As our idea person, she helps brainstorm and problem solve in creative ways. Feyza also helps the researchers and other aspects of Kel Jel in any way she can. She develops marketing strategies and is aware of what consumers are looking for. Feyza motivates our small, but mighty team to keep going till the end even through quarantine. There would be no Kel Jel without her.

Ngoc-Anh Tran

Ngoc-Anh is our project researcher and project manager of Kel Jel. She is a valuable team member of Kel Jel because she made sure everything and everyone was on track, reminding everyone what needed to get done, etc. Ngoc-Anh also did lots of contributions to the project which benefited Kel Jel a ton! Team Kel-Jel is truly grateful for her, and wouldn't be where we are without her.

Yeshua Esteves Noriega

Yeshua is our team designer. He helped propose new logo ideas for Kel Jel and helped design the characters.

Nilanie Rivera

Nilanie is the Digital Media Specialist. She helps with social media, making sure to post and spreading awareness of the problem and making sure people hear about Kel Jel.

Ahella Bedir

Ahella is our Designer & Advertiser. She created our slogan, and also made various ads and proposed and designed ideas of characters for Kel Jel. Ahella was also very active, contributing to Kel Jel in various ways.

Meryam Atid

Meryam is also another designer. She created the unique Kel Jel logo and helped with the characters. Meryam was also active on our google classroom page trying to do things to benefit Kel Jel.

Rachel Rose

Rachel is another one of our idea people contributing her various unique ideas. She also was a planner that helped organize important things.

Sarah Rose

Sarah is our researcher for the KelPlastic, contributing her findings with the other researchers. She also is a designer that designed a drawing for one of our characters, Delcycer and another idea person.

Giovana (Gia) Comins

Gia was the one who came up with KelPlastic and is also a researcher for the group. Her findings of kelp and plastic have benefited Kel Jel a lot in making our final product.

Georgia Pelto

Georgia is our website designer, helping to make our website the best as it could be and one of our pitchers that helped pitch our product, Kel Jel.

Angel Robbins

Angel is a planner and designer for Kel Jel helping each of the designers and sharing her ideas with everyone.

Travis Newman

Travis is another one of our designers and helped create one of the characters for Kel Jel. He is also a contributor to the Kel Jel website helping Georgia and others with making the website perfect. Travis is also a tech specialist.

Darren Sengphachanh

Darren was another idea person for the group, Kelp Bound but had to abandon the project. Still, he did all that he could to help with advertising, marketing, etc.

Izayiah Gallaher

Izayiah worked on Kelp Bound before the two other groups were combined to make Kel Jel. He is a researcher for Kel Jel.

Andes Khuc

Andes helped design and make our mascot, Kelpie. She contributes with her fascinating drawings and designs of many characters.

Mohamed Raqabi

Mohamed is a researcher and helped find statistics and more information on the plastic problem. He also worked on marketing and how to expand Kel Jel.

Dionna Watkins

Dionna helped make Kelpie with Andes. She also is a designer for Kel Jel.

Journey Derosier-Michaud

Journey is one of our social media specialists helping with our Instagram, raising awareness of the plastic problem, and introducing Kel Jel to vast audiences.

Brooke Montalvo

Brooke contributed with her ideas to expand Kel Jel to not only body wash pods but to shampoo pods as well.
