As of now, research has only been conducted on adults, so there has been no determination about whether the tibial tubercle osteotomy is effective at treating patellar instability after having had an MPFL reconstruction in adolescents. But, the research that has been conducted demonstrates the tibial tubercle osteotomy is effective, but not by much. The MPFL reconstruction is good enough for patients with mild knee instability. Patients with severe or reoccurring knee instability should vouch for the tibial tubercle osteotomy.
